One of the most enticing aspects of Rift: Planes of Telara is the new Soul system used to help players determine their abilities in their class. The system essentially works like this. You start the game by choosing a Calling – immediately after you start playing, you will receive your first Soul, a specialization within the Calling that provides you with certain types of abilities.

For example, if you choose the Mage Calling, you will be able to choose from options like Warlock, Pyromancer and Necromancer. Each type of Soul provides different bonuses to your character, allowing you to deal different types of damage, and in some cases provide healing or support abilities.

The Callings

There are four callings in Rift – Warrior, Mage, Cleric, and Rogue. Each fits a specific generalized role including tanking, DPS, healing and support. The majority of the roles are related to damage dealing in some style or another, but there are a lot of different combinations that will allow characters to heal themselves or others and to perform crowd control.

Choosing Your Souls

Throughout the game you’ll be able to unlock various souls in the game – each of them linking directly with two other souls. At any given time, you can have three souls active on your character. Each soul will link up with specific abilities that then unlock abilities in your Soul’s tree and root system. Those abilities will compliment each other across all souls, allowing you to perform a variety of actions depending on what you want to do in the game.

Furthermore, Rift allows you to purchase extra Soul tree slots. By doing this, you can create up to four different layouts for soul trees. This means, if you unlock all the souls for your Calling (of which there are more than a dozen), you can create four different combinations of souls, allowing you to adapt your gameplay depending on the end-game content you are playing – PvP, raiding, or solo questing.

Making Your Decisions Count

The thing about the soul system is that you will almost never be able to choose just right. With thousands of potential combinations, hundreds of hybrids you can create, and many more styles of play that will vary depending on the decisions you make, it’s impossible to get it just right. But, with practice and a keen eye, you can start tweaking your character to play as you need them to in the style you enjoy.

Rift is a game about many things, and unlike some recent MMOs, a lot of stock has been placed on the economy – a relatively standard interaction between players with crafting and gathering professions and an auction house. But, how do you put those tools to use to make the most possible Platinum – the in game currency of choice? Here are three tips to get you started:

1.	Choose Professions Wisely – In Rift, you can choose three professions from the 10 available. There are 7 different crafting professions and 3 gathering professions. Each crafting profession will need different materials from two of the three gathering professions (though usually primarily from just one). As a result, you should choose either one or two crafting professions and then a gathering profession to support them. However, before you reach level 30, it is a good idea to steer clear of the crafting professions altogether as they take too much gold and platinum to level up.

2.	Use the Auction House for All Sales – The auction house is perfect to make sales to your fellow players, but it requires you to spend time carefully analysing the needs and demands of your fellow players. Always remember, buy goods when prices are low and sell them only when prices are high.

3.	Track Demand for Top Items – With a brand new game, there are very few tools to help you determine what sells and for how much. So, to make sure you are getting the best deals possible, start keeping track of prices in a spreadsheet or document on your computer. When they rise, make sure you are selling and when they dive (assuming they are not diving due to a nerf of some sort), but things up.

Making platinum in Rift will inevitably involve plenty of other methods that will allow you to farm for ores, plants and skinnable mobs, but if you want to make the most possible currency in the game, make sure you are using the tips above and the auction house liberally.

If you play it just right, you’ll be able to develop a keen eye for what sells and how much it sells for. If you want to be successful as a trader in Rift: Planes of Telara, you must first know what people want and how much they are willing to pay to get it. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be well on your way to a nice fortune of Gold and Platinum so you can dominate your server.

Every MMO is built around one single idea – group play. The idea is that you join up with other players and take on the top level content in the game so that you can destroy your enemies at top speed. That goes doubly so for Rift which has quite a few group moments for you to enjoy. There are Rifts, PvP matches and end-game instances that allow you to join up with other players and for that you need a good group.

What You’ll Be Playing

In Rift, there are three primary areas where you will need a group. Those areas include:

•	PvP – PvP comes in two forms – either world PvP or Warfronts. In world PvP, you’re on your own, but in Warfronts, you can bring other players in with you and take on opponents in goal based combat. The better groups will be those that communicate effectively and build a strong long terms strategy.

•	Rifts – Technically you can complete rifts with any players in your vicinity and they will scale to match the level and skill of your players. However, if you want to be truly effective in these types of combat, you need a group with which you can freely communicate and develop rapport. To do that, you need a guild with players that can join up and really push the game to its limits when a rift goes live.

•	Dungeons and Raids – There are 5 person dungeons and 10 and 20 person raids in the game that require you to put together a strong contingent of players. Because the Soul system creates such diversity in the player makeups, your goal should be to choose players that fit general roles like tanking, healing and damage. Each dungeon team needs one healer and one tank and should include at least one hybrid who can do anything on the field. In raids, the makeup will depend more on skill and the bosses you are facing.

Creating a Guild

Finding a few good players with which you can team up and play the game is one thing, but the best way to really take on everything Rift has to offer is to create a guild. A guild gives you a number of extra benefits including in game resources at the bank and auction house, easier chat resources, and a chance to meet up easily through guild meeting tools.

Like any MMO, your success will ultimately depend on your team’s ability to communicate and work together. Start on that now and you’ll be well ahead of your opponents every step of the way – even in the strictest and toughest PvP brackets.

As with any MMO, there are a number of issues that Rift’s dedicated players will run into. As a player of the hottest new MMO on the market, here are three things you will likely need to deal with and how you can best take care of them before they really dig into your play time.

1.	Making Platinum

Making platinum is tough at first. You’ll have a hard time coming up with the 2 pieces you need by level 20 for your first mount and the rest you’ll need by level 30 and 40 to start upgrading your gear and other items. However, with a little careful planning, you’ll be well prepared for anything the game has to throw at you starting at level 1. Make sure you choose two or even three gathering professions from the get go. This will allow you to make gold and platinum as you level without having to look for it. You can also start using the auction house to sell your drops like scrolls and the ore and plants you gather. The sooner you start loading up on the professions that will be used at level 50 the better you’ll do.

2.	Building a Good Team

A good team will be the core of any good player. You cannot be the best in Rift without joining up with fellow players who can keep pace with you. This is a multiplayer game after all. If you do not yet have any fellow players on your side, start running Rifts whenever you see one forming. These are great ways to meet new players.

You can also meet new players on forums on the official rift website or on sites like the Telarapedia on Wikia. There are thousands of players who also need a good group to rely on for their weekly raiding and PvP runs – use those resources to find them.

3.	Levelling Speed

Leveling in a game like Rift is not easy. Nor is it hard though if you know where to go and when to go there. Questing should be your primary form of levelling. However, whenever you see a Rift, you should take advantage of it as soon as possible and gain the XP that it provides. PvP Warfronts and dungeons also provide XP, so there is no reason you should ever have to grind mindlessly on mobs to level up.

Rift is a fantastic game and a big time competitor to games like World of Warcraft with their relatively simple gameplay style. However, if you want to be truly successful in the game, you must start establishing strategy early and be willing to work hard to meet new people, make platinum and level up fast. Do those three things and you’ll be set by level 50.

Rift: Planes of Telara is barely lighting up the servers after launch and already we’re looking at the first few guides for the game. Hundreds of people are out there playing the game and entertaining themselves with a slew of different content options – from the Warfronts to the Rifts to the end-game dungeons and raids. This is shaping up to be a BIG game and that’s saying something when you consider how big a few other MMOs out there are.

But, how do the guides look? Are they useful or just tossed together to cash in on the quick release of the game? Some of the guides are okay for sure but others are a bit lacking. I see dozens of guides that just don’t look that good. They are missing a lot of options and read more like official strategy guides (i.e. no strategies) than an actually useful guide.

But, there are a few that look decent, mainly Rift Secrets from Tony Sanders. This puppy is loaded with tips about how to defeat your opponents in PvP, how to level up quickly, and how to make a good chunk of Platinum in the game FAST. You’re pretty much going to cruise through the game if you know what you are doing, and this guide shows you how to know exactly what you are doing.

I can’t say which guide will be best, but I can say this game is awesome so you should get a guide as soon as possible and right now, the best one I see is Rift Secrets. Get on over to Tony’s site and see what he has to offer.

So, there is another MMO fresh on the market and that means there are a few dozen opinions already comparing it to World of Warcraft, both favourably and unfavourably. I personally am reserving judgment until the game hits the end cap when we can really see how good it is. Without seeing the end of the game, it’s nearly impossible to know if we’re talking about a good game or a polished game – two very different things.

But, so far so good. I’ve seen some epic Rift battles, great PvP and surprisingly well balanced souls considering there are so many of them. For players new to Rift, you’ll be playing as a character from one of six races making up two factions. While the two factions very much don’t like each other, they are fighting a common enemy and that means a lot of very interesting quests and storylines that will play out throughout the game.

The game itself is not necessarily easy. Making Platinum is hard, levelling is slow going (though fun with the quests provided) and the game has a good chunk of end-game content to play through. So, if you’re used to new MMOs that let you down on day one, this is not one of those games. In fact, it very well might be the first game in a while for which I want a strategy guide right out of the gate. Most games I can find my way through pretty well, but this one is looking more and more to be a help first kind of game.

And thus far, the best guide I’ve seen is called Rift Secrets from Tony Sanders. It’s over at his website and it’s loaded with good tips on how to beat your opponents in Warfronts and Dungeons alike. If you’re into this game as much as I am, definitely check this guide out.

If you just started playing Rift: Planes of Telara you probably want to know what the best strategy is for that fresh Guardian or Defiant. Unfortunately, there are not too many strategies available just yet. The majority of tips and guides out there are for beta content only and while the beta was pretty much release quality, a lot of things have changed since then too.

Now, if you’re a big WoW player the game is pretty similar to Warcraft with many of the same mechanics and a lot of similar themes, but if you think you can whip through Rift based on your WoW prowess alone, you’ll be in for a pretty big disappointment. So, you may want to get a strategy guide – one that gets you through the basics of the game, outlining what you’ll be doing along the way and showing you how to dominate your opponents in PvP and end-game content alike.

The best one I’ve found thus far is called Rift Secrets and it’s from the uber-prolific guide writer, Tony Sanders. This guy has written more stuff than you can imagine and the result is a collection of strategies and tips designed to help you build a bigger and stronger character that won’t be stepped on by anyone else.
